The Satsuki 'Benibotan' (紅牡丹) is a popular Japanese azalea cultivar often used for bonsai, known for its intense red, double-petaled flowers that bloom in late spring (May–June). It features deep green, lanceolate leaves, moderate growth, and holds historical significance among classic Satsuki, according to the Azalea Society of America. [1, 2, 3, 4], where this cultivar was already authored in 1692 by Ito Ihei, a nurseryman of the castle grounds of a feudal lord, it describes in detail the azaleas of that time including 161 Satsuki, among which 'Benibotan', and 'Osakazuki' are still with us today.
