I learned something new today: when Kusamono is being placed as a companion to a bonsai, it's being called shitakusa.
To be specific, Young Choe, a thought leader in the art of Kusamono explains:
"There’s some debate and confusion as to the proper names for bonsai accent plantings. When used as a bonsai accent, this is called shitakusa; these designs are subtler, reflecting seasonality or the wildness of the tree’s origin. When displayed alone, the plants are taller, bolder, entire compositions in themselves—this is kusamono."
