Callicarpa is a very wanted species for bonsai cultivation. It is fact a shrub, that produces extremely beautiful purple berries.
The downside is that the plant is extremely brittle and difficult to shape.
These ones are from cuttings, I was allowed to take from my neighbor's garden in May 2024
Pot: Tokoname pot by Heian-Senzan, Japan 18 x 14 x 6 cm.
Age: 2.5 years
Size: 15 cm
What you see are not yet berries, but the flowers that will grow into those stunning purple berries in fall.
... from a different point of view...
The Heian-Senzan pot is 18x14x6 cm, acquired at https://bonsaipots.eu (highly recommended) for the right price
Just received the HeianSenzan pot I have chosen for this Callicarpa bodinieri. My 1st milestone shines brightly in it. Exactly what I had envisioned. Now lets grow some purple berries and watch how it grows a nice patch of moss.
This will be my 1st giveway to a worthy caretaker
Top View. Starting a bright looking year 3. I can't wait to see the fully grown berries after leaf drop.
My first horticultural bonsai achievement: taking cuttings, growing and shaping Callicarpa into fruiting pre-bonsai.
(/me taps himself on the chest and nods: "I did this.")
Callicarpa is extremely brittle. There is only one time in the year where it is bendable: end May/earlyJune.
