The snowberry (Symphoricarpos albus) is a deciduous shrub that is particularly prized for its pearly white berries, which remain on the plant through fall and winter. Native to North America, it was introduced to Europe in the 19th century. Its slighly pinkish summer flowers attract bees and bumblebees, while the berries—though poisonous to humans—are eaten by birds. Thanks to its hardiness, rapid growth, and tolerance for poor soil and shade, the snowberry is an ideal choice for both novice gardeners and public green spaces.
As a bonsai, growing sowberries is a challenge, as the flowers only form at a long whip on the top of the plant, and it therefor requires some artistic challenges to form it into a worthy bonsai.
