  • Pinus Parviflora - Japanese White Pine Care

    • Don't decandle.
    • Don't pull needles. If you want to reduce needles, you cut them off very short with scissors.
    • Needles only last for two years. Old needles will yellow and turn brown in the fall, and they can be knocked off very easily then.
      They grow extremely slowly. Know that when you prune, that foliage you remove may take a decade to grow back.
    • They are reluctant back budders. Therefore treasure every twig that is close to the trunk.
    • They prefer to be kept dryer than Japanese Black Pine.
    • Expect to wait about 25 to 30 years for the smooth gray bark to get rough.
    • This tree is susceptible to wind damage.

    Do keep in mind that the preferred time for major pruning work is mid summer.  In our time zone that is July.

    Octoberis one of the rare time slots where the sap flow on two needle pines is low and the tree can be needle plucked.

    • Spring: bud reducing
    • Mid Summer: Pruning in July
    • Early October: the only window for needle plucking (!)

    • Verwijder geen kaarsen.
    • Trek geen naalden uit, maar knip je ze heel kort af met een schaar.
    • Naalden blijven maar twee jaar zitten. Oude naalden worden in de herfst geel en bruin, en vallen dan heel gemakkelijk vanzelf af
    • Ze groeien ontzettend traag. Hou daar rekening mee bij het snoeien. Het kan wel tien jaar duren voor verwijderd loof weer is aangegroeid.
    • Ze vormen niet snel nieuwe scheuten. Koester daarom elk takje dat dicht bij de stam zit.
    • Ze bevoorkeuren drogere condities dan de Japanse zwarte den.
    • Het duurt ongeveer 25 tot 30 jaar vooralleer de gladde grijze schors ruw wordt.
    • De boom is gevoelig voor windschade.
